- Description also known as Manoomin (harvesting berry), this annual native plant grows in shallow water in small lakes and slow-flowing streams and often only the flowering head of wild rice rises above the water. The grain is enjoyed by aquatic wildlife and was historically gathered and eaten in North America and China.
To prepare wild rice, rinse in cold water. Combine 1 cup wild rice to 4 cups water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer at least 45 minutes or until most of the rice has curled open.
One cup uncooked rice yields between 3 to 4 cups when cooked.
